SMAR Model Lesson Plan

SAMR Model

The SAMR model is an acronym that stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. It's a framework used in education to describe the different levels of technology integration in teaching and learning. At the substitution level, technology is used as a direct substitute for traditional tools or processes, without any significant change in the task. For example, instead of writing on paper, students may type their assignments on a computer. The technology is simply replacing the traditional tool without altering the learning experience. Moving up to the augmentation level, technology is used to enhance or improve a task. It offers functional improvements or additional features that weren't possible with traditional methods. For instance, students might use a digital dictionary or spell-check tool while writing to improve their language skill. The modification level involves using technology to significantly redesign or modify the task, allowing for new possibilities and approaches. This goes beyond mere enhancement. An example could be using collaborative online platforms for students to work together on a project, even if they are in different locations. Finally, at the redefinition level, technology enables the creation of new tasks and experiences that were previously inconceivable. It transforms the learning process and opens up new opportunities. For example, students might use virtual reality to explore historical sites or engage in immersive simulations that enhance their understanding of complex concepts. The SAMR model encourages educators to progress from substitution to redefinition, promoting more innovative and transformative uses of technology in education. By leveraging technology effectively, teachers can create engaging and meaningful learning experiences for their students.

 SAMR Model Lesson Plan

Design a lesson plan for primary children with two levels of ICT using SAMR model integration.

Lesson No: 1

Teacher: Yeshi Tshering Dema

Topic: Natural and human things

Class: Iv

Time: 45 Minutes

Teaching learning materials: video links, images, textbook, mentimeter quizzes.

ICT model: SAMR model

Previous knowledge: students should have an idea about forest and scientific terminology such as living and non-living things.

Lesson objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. define natural and human made things with one example in their own words after class discussion.

  2. distinguish between natural and human made things with an example without help of others.

  3. recognize the natural and human made things in the environment after the class.

Lesson introduction (5 minutes)

  • Do you think the river we see outside is made by humans?

  • Do you think the classroom we are sitting in right now is a natural thing?

  • After that I will let students guess the topic.

  • Then i will show a video on natural and human things to enhance their understanding.

Lesson Development (35 minutes)

Information input (5 minutes)

  • Explain the concepts of natural and human made things with examples.

  • Shows pictures of nature and humans made on PowerPoint.

Activity 1 (15 minutes)

  • Let students do an activity which involves a quiz and question/answer on mentimeter.

  • For this student will be given 15 minutes each.

or

Activity 2 (10 minutes)

  • Provide students with a worksheet to be worked in pairs.

  • For this they will get 10 minutes to complete the work.

Follow up activity (5 minutes)

  • Some students can share their response to the class and discuss the answers in the class.

  • For this they will get 3 minutes to share and another 2 minutes for discussion

Lesson closure (5 minutes)

Let students share one thing about the topic in round robin strategy.

Review the key concepts with students.
